I just thought I would post some pics to help you to find out if you have a lady or a man snail. These pictures can also be found on applesnail.net..Linda Female Brig Notice the lack of the sheath Male BrigI hope this helps you to decide on the sex of your snail and I hope your little ones co-operate as well as these snails have.

how big do ur snails need to be before u sex them? mine are only little.. the large ones are about 2 - 3 cm the small ones about 1cm . how do they respond to being taken from the tank and.. if u consider breeding snails how big a tank do u need? also... if u would like a few babies but not hundreds can u select a few eggs/

Hi Emma
I'd say about an inch but the bigger the snail the easier it is.
The snails get used to being handled after a few times , some times you can even feed them by hand which is nice .... most of ours seem to enjoy being handled and having their shells stroked ... LOL ... of course there are some that will not come out when being handled but thats life I guess hehe.
Well breeding is a mamoth task , specially if you hatch whole clutches. We have a 12 gallon hatchery , a 10 gallon intermediate tank and a 22 gallon teenage tank and then we have a 30 gallon pet/breeder tank. Soon we will be ditching the 12 gallon and the 10 gallon and replacing them with a 30 gallon intermediate tank and a 15 gallon hatchery tank .... we've pretty much run out of room then. Of course you can hatch only part clutches , when you remove the clutch from the tank then just cut off the amount you want to mature and hatch ... usually a 3rd of a clutch would hatch say 20 babies which is managable in a 10 gallon but they'd need more room as they grow , although we have had clutches hatch around 200 babies so a 3rd of that clutch would have been 60+ babies .... thats when you start getting problems if you are not well prepared.
Hope that has helped Emma

Hi Mike, I just sexed one the other week.....after holding him for a minute or 2 he slowly came out.... ...then wriggled a lot... ...... ...eventually he gave up wriggling but I still hadn't been able to tell. It took another attempt to discover he's male. Janet

Cheers...he's a dark striped purple snail.
I sometimes see my adults waving their "parts" about if they are on one of the females but this little fella hasn't had a go yet.....he's making me think I made a mistake and he's actually female lol.
