Oh Linda, I have just read this thread!!!!! I have my fingers tightly crossed for the other 3. I wonder if this IS something that fulicas are prone to, it always seems to be these that are prone to getting sick. I really really hope that they pull through it. Love Val x (late as usual )

I'm so sorry Linda. I have just lost my first adult apple snails (four of them) within a month and I know how horrible it is to helplessy watch them fade away. Janet

Hi Linda, thats a real shame to hear about ur snails I have also lost several young fulica of lately. Actually 5 of my fulica came from the same person as Pauls did so Im wondering if might be them. They just seem to fade away. I really dont know if it was the result of parasites of some genetic factor. I imagine that your blondies are going to be fine as everyone else's are.I really hope that ur 4th snail pulls through..

Nope he didnt rally RIP Columbus big fella...I was trying steriods on him but I had a feeling he was on his way out of this world so I was to late...sorry if anyone is sensative but he had expelled his insides when I looked at him yesterday...so no amount of meds would have helped him...the 2 blondies are doing fine but they are not the same as the big guys...I have took them out of the 2ft tank and put them in somthing smaller as they looked lost and these buggers are hard to find LOL...not sure if I want to risk getting more maybe I will look into getting anything thats not Fulica's I just dont know any opinions anyone?...Linda

If you do keep more, I'd suggest starting with bigger snails. I have lost 3 snails to this problem. 2 fulica, 1 panthera and I have 1 dimidiata like that now. Everyones's have been small. What is strange is that the now ill dimidiata has never ever been near the others. I am very strict when it comes to hygiene between the two tanks so I am surprised. It doesn't prove anything conclusively but it seems to hint that the problem isn't infection, though what it is I don't know However, I have small snails that are fine that have been mixed with the ill ones (before they got ill and were isolated), and every single snail that is large is fine so far. If it is an infection of some sort it must have a very long incubation period. My last 2 ill snails died months ago and then suddenly another one gets ill. I've cleaned and sterilised the tank between a few times. Very odd. I thought infection would have wiped them out with them being confined together. paul

Yes it is all very strange indeed , I need to make a correction though ... when Linda said he had expelled his insides ... well it wasn't his guts but actually the inside of his mouth ... that was the whitish thing Linda had seen but the way his head was it looked like it was something else and she didn't want to mess ... but i did and it became apparent that this was indeed his mouth collapsing rather than it being something on it's side.
I'm not going to rule out the idea of steroids as a possible treatment , I think we acted far too late with columbus as his mouth had already collapsed so even if he had rallied round he'd have still been pretty much terminal. Who knows what may have happened if we had tried the steroid mix a few weeks ago?? If the chance arises again I will endeavour to retry this treatment .. although with everything that has happened recently I hope that chance doesn't come too quickly.
Cheers
Daz

Yes it does...and also there is a picture on your web site Paul..someone had it happen to one of their snails but it went back...I thought that it looked like a group of skin and eggs...Daz and I will agree to dissagree on this one...but I think that it was intestinal with a mouth collapse too...sorry if anyone is a bit sensitive on this subject...anyway I will take a look back at petsnails and try to find the picture..Linda
