Ooh I didn't think of doing that! Hubby always said the chlorine could kill the bacteria in the filter, but if you put it in alongside then it cant have time to?

Hubby's right, chlorine/chloramines are deadly to the bacteria, but with conditioner added either first, or while the tank is refilling, it's not an issue at all.

Lisa, what test do you use for the nitrate tests? if its the strips i'd use the liquids as the strips i used timesed the real readings by 5 ie real tank reading 5 ;D strip reading 25, not harmfull as my goldfish would get to 100ppm (mg/l) within a week even with weekly water changes of 25% and what are your readings for nitrate?

if you have that pipe outlet (bit letting water into tank) into a bucket just below the surface then u can add the water conditioner as you fill, or fill a large container like a water butt and add the conditioner to that then pump it into the tank
