Just thought I would mention this as the latest thing to have in your aquarium is moss balls .They look absolutly wonderfull in the tank and we have found them fine with snails they either dont bother much with them or they climb on them and nibble trapped particles that are on them..but we will never ever put them in with the goldfish again as you guys know the stupid stupid goldfish will eat anything and everything and all they saw the moss balls as was a food source and within 2 days they had ripped them apart the moss was floating in the tank clogging the filters up but much worse was the death of one of them Zebbie{fancy goldfish} he ate that much of the stuff that he got a blockage and died..I would be very interested to hear if other people have managed to keep these with goldfish..or is it just ours that are super greedy they even managed to eat a plastic plant between them ..Linda

I don't have any particular experience with moss balls, but I had goldfish in a tank with some java moss, which they didn't it, but they kept nibbling it to find trapped food in it, which basically made had the same effect as you described (minus death). Goldfish will basically try to eat everything once, and if they don't like it, they will try it again and again. A bit like one of my aunts, actually (she will only try it if it's free, though). It's good to keep some live plants with goldfish and to let it nibble on it. The best plant for that purpose is the anachris (elodea densa) which is so hardy it doesn't mind being nibbled now and then.

Linda, Same with me and my goldfish. I purchased a few moss balls and popped them in my goldfish tank. They ignored them for a couple of days. Got up one morning and they had ripped them to shreds. My goldfish are a foot long or longer. One looked like it was going to explode. Only thing I could think of to do, was the old time remedy for constipation. I got out the mineral oil and eyedropper. Dosed him up and turned him loose. When he pooped he put a oil slick in my tank. I don't know if the oil worked or he was just scared silly from the treatment but he was fine the next day. Hubby says carting a fish to the vet, just ain't in our budget. Hugs, Joyce

I know only one place selling them here. They're rather expensive, so it was really annoying when I bought a couple, and they disintegrated in my tank for reasons I can't fathom... (no goldfishes there)

The tank is a 70 gal and way to small. Saving up for a 100 gal. I can't separate them. They get depressed. Don't laugh its true. Bought them as feeder fish five years ago and they were about two or three inches long. The turtles were not interested in live food. This is not a great picture but see the all white one. He was pure gold. Turned white over night. Shocked the socks off me. This was just a couple of months ago. No health problems, happy as a tick on a hog. I waited for him to become deathy ill . So must be a goldfish thing. Have to admit I keep waiting for him to change back.LOL I have alot of filteration in that tank. Big pooper they are. Hubby loves these guys so they will get their tank. Hugs, Joyce
