hello everyone. Up until now, I have only owned land snails. I have decided to branch off into aquatic snails as well, so I have a quick question about their care. I am receiving (probably tomorrow) 2 Spixi snails, 2 ramshorn and 2 trumpet snails. I am also getting some liquid calcium to go in the tank. Now, my question is, can any of these live together or do they need seperate tanks. I currently have 2 aquariums, 1 contains goldfish, it's an 80 litre with 3 fish, and i have a slightly smaller tank, not sure of the size, but it only contains 1 fish, one of those orange things that sucker their faces to the sides. he is a very grumpy fish and was removed from the tank with the goldfish as he constantly chased them and was stressing them. neither of these tanks are heated, do they need to be for the snails? i can easily drop in a tank heater if needed with the grumpy fish, since I understand they can live in either.

Welcome to the forum, Spixis are tropical and will require a tank heated to around 24C. Ramshorns and mts can be kept in both tropical and coldwater. The goldfish might bother your snails. I don't keep goldfish but have heard stories of them ripping off tentacles and harassing snails into not eating, not moving and eventually dying. I think there's a couple of species of smaller, fancy goldfish that some people manage to keep with snails without problems. I think your grumpy fish also sounds tropical....if it's a plec it'll need more room eventually as bn plecs (one of the smaller species of plecs) needs around 10g per fish. Common plecs can grow huge (14 inches plus). I would try and figure out the size of the smaller tank so you can be sure you're not overstocking. Are your tanks filtered? Regards Janet

Yes, they are both filtered. i think the smaller tank is about 30 litres. Grumpy isn't a plec, i don't think. He is one of those skinny orange ones, think he is a Kuhli Loach? solid orange. The goldfish are calico ones, the ones with the fancy double tails. grumpy looks kind like this one www.plastic-chicken.co.uk/snails/fish.jpg

That's a weather loach. It can be tropical or coldwater. I used to have one that was really shy, and a friend has one that's grumpy and shy lol.

Mmmm I tend to think that this is the same as the one we used to have , I believe what you have there is a Golden Chinese Algae Eater ... Luvfishies will be able to verify that though as I'm not 100% sure.
I wouldn't put snails in with that if it's grumpy with fish , can't see it being any different with snails.

badmanstropicalfish.com/message_board/messages/231/35242.jpg That's a Golden Chinese Algae Eater And the pic you posted is a weather loach, see the difference in the mouths? (As well as the body lol) So from the way you described the mouth I'd say it was actually the chinese algea eater. I went from the pic not the description bad me lol

Thats him! That looks more like him than the picture I posted. When we bought him, the guy in the pet shop said he was ok with other fish. he is ok with the mountain minnows I have in the tank(forgot to mention them, 6 little tiny ones) but he had a facination with the long flowing tails of the goldfish. He never damaged the tails, but his chasing the tails stressed the goldfish. Got a tank sorted now for the spixi's, it has a heater, set to 24 celcius. And I figure the others can go in with the goldfish and see how they get along. Thanks for the help!

Hi Moracai
We had one of these.."cough" Caitlin fish we called her LOL..those that have been members a while will remember how upset I was , I loved her to bits but one night she just lost it big time and went attacking everything in sight it was dreadful to watch and we had to take her out of the tank and placed her in a small tank on her own..within a couple of hours she was dead she had a total flip out and was panting heavy it was the most odd thing ever and we will never get another one of those..Linda

So sorry to hear about yours pheonixx. Ours does the panting all the time. It's really weird. he sits on the bottom and his gills are going so fast, but he has been like that for a couple of months. We put the ramshorn and the spixi in with him yesterday, since thats the tank thats heated, and he has completely ignored them so far. We will continue to keep an eye on him though, and if he gets grumpy with them we have a 3rd tank on standby. Think we need a bigger flat for all these tanks, since we have 3 big ones with GALS as well!

Common plecs can actually grow to over 2ft. And they dont grow to the size of their tank, they keep going - so really a tank double it's expected length would be best. So 4ft x 2ft x 2ft minimum. On the plus side, it can take them years to reach that size ;D
But you haven't got one...so dont know why I posted that...
