Baz and I were talking about how we're going to set up Hannibal's new tank (when we get it *lol*) and we talked about having a snail or two.
We were wondering if any could live with a plec? Hannibal is only 4" at the moment but could grow up to 12"+ (average for his species is apparently 7-10").
We can plan other fish around Hannibal and snail/s. But we can't plan Hannibal around them if you get me - he's the stayer.

Mmmmm to be honest I'm not too sure on this one , I think it's one of those split opinion subjects. I think Caroline (Luvfishies) may keep snails in with her plec but there again it's a sailfin plec , I wouldn't like to say for sure ...... Caroline!!! Can you help us with this one please?
Cheers

Hmmmmm, yes, this is one of those times that a plec may be fine, but I do know of people who have had issues with plecs and snails. I think my "common" may have to find a new home, as I've caught it slurping snail shells, and he's an aggressive plec. Chases the Sailfin around all the time, and the sailfin is twice the common's size!
I'd definately go with Marisas and/or Canas, as they get large enough. Now would be the time to intro them, as Hannibal is still smallish, and may ignore them if he grows up with them. The only prob with Marisas and Canas is that they eat live plants.
I'm afraid this is one of those "try it and see" scenarios. At the mo, my plecs haven't done any damage, but that's not to say they won't down the road.

Thanks for the info Well bit more to throw into the works - Hannibal might not be a tidger in the long run after all. I wish we knew for sure what species he was - everyone's saying different things. It's been thrown into the works that he may be liposarcus pardalis which grows to 2-3ft And yet noone I've spoken to has a chocolate albino over 12", and Scotcat says choccie albinos were originally farm bred in Czech Republic and don't grow over 12". Just trying to confirm which species of "common" he is and how big he will grow. His mum (who I saw) was apparently full grown and only about 8-9" but I can't trust the word of the fish shop as to whether she'd be 2-3ft if she was in a decent tank *lol*. Why do plecs have to be so difficult and yet my faves?

My fave plecs are bristle nosed plecs......I have two males (in seperate tanks) and hubby has a male in his 3ft community tank.
I saw some medusa bn plecs in my lfs and was drooling but I haven't any space for one right now.

Thanks for the info I love bristlenoses too, but we have a bit of news on the Hannibal front. We've managed to talk Connie into letting him go to a fantastic home who are prepared for his full size. They're even helping us find a new plec (a Royal hopefully) to go in the new tank. I swear the bigger pet shops should be held accountable for misinformation - if they'd said that Hannibal could reach 2-3ft we'd have never bought him and Connie wouldn't have had to go through this. They still have his relatives for sale as a completely different species than he actually is, saying they'll reach 12" max.

Good news for Hannibal! Just be aware that Royals need wood in their tank, and they are clumsy oxes! They don't eat plants, but they sure will uproot them! Mine is about 8" not including tail, and he's NOT a gentle giant

Hannibal and Bubba have gone to their new home now The Royal isn't coming through though, so I'm having a rethink.
