My step dad snagged me a sail from the bottom of a lake and i dont know what type of snail it is. I'll try to be as detailed as possible because i dont have a camera to show you what it looks like. It is about 1 inch and has a baby that rides around on its back. I don't know if that will help you identify it...maybe it will? Its a brown color and has a spiral shell that poits to the side and is about the an inch at the opening and gets small real fast at the tip. the body is a brown almost the same color as the shell and has tons of really really tiny spots. i hope thats detailed enough for someone to identify it. if not ill try to describe it somemore.

Until the snail is IDed I would keep it in freshwater. What country are you in and what lake did it come from? Re-reading your post I guess it could be a type of viviparus, have a google around on freshwater snails and see what you come up with. This might help you too: www.applesnail.net/content/snails_various.php

im in the US and he got it from lake paris. its probably a viviparus now that i see pictures. is this type of snail a cold water snail or one that my mollies could live in 72F-82F? i believe thats the temperature range. is a ph of 8.4, hardness of 150, and alkalinity of 300 desirable for these snails. would/could this fairly large snail harm my molly fry in any way. or would its baby be better in the tank?

They have a trapdoor and only 1 set of tentacles....they also have cute long "noses" and lots of speckles.
I wouldn't keep them with tropical fish since they are coldwater snails and there's also a risk of contaminating your tank with wild caught critters.
