I've got two young plecs that need homes, and wondered if anyone here was interested? Percy is our common plec, he's about 7-8 inches at the moment. Dyson has been id-ed on a plec forum as an L001 (Glyptoperichthys joselimaianus?) Gold Spot and is about 6 inches. He was sold to us as an orange spotted, but he's definitely not one of those. I love them both to bits, but they were bought for our 6ft tank, and although at first all was peaceful, as our oscar has grown, he's started to pick on them. Our other tanks will be too small for them as they grow up, so we're looking for a new home for them. They dont have to go together, and I'm open to offers as we really cant keep these two much longer. They are both in excellent condition, as they've been in a seperate tank from the cichlids for a couple of weeks. They will grow up to be big fish, common plecs can reach up to 2ft - but that's unusual - the norm being around 12-18". Our L001 will grow (according to webpages) somewhere between 10 and 16". So they will need a big tank, although they grow very slowly - and some can take a couple of years to reach adult size. I've put them up on Aquarist Classified, well - Kathy did for me. But if anyone here is interested, and can collect (bring your own bucket *lol*), then I'm open to offers. Doesn't have to be monetary. Piccies here - but they're old pics, and our L001 is a chocolate brown with orange spots. Percy (top pic) is the most beautiful common plec I've seen, he's very dark and has lovely markings. www.aquarist-classifieds.co.uk/php/detail63_40027.php

Oooh, they're both lovely! Good luck, I really hope someone steps forward to give them homes. You could also try over at www.corydorasworld.com as it's a UK-based forum. Tim, the owner of it, is a great guy, with many contacts in the "fishie" world.

Thanks - shall do that (in the morning as am awaiting chinese take away and nothing gets in the way of that *lol*). Could come in handy as I'm looking for cories for my planted tank, when it's ready. It's breaking my heart to let Percy go, he may be a common plec, but there's nothing common about him. He's got a great personality, he loves courgette, he is always noseying into things, and he's just so beautiful. That pic doesn't do him any justice, but the camera I used to take photos of the tank with broke, and my new one cant capture them. Dyson's stunning too, and my littlest girl Becca (one of the triplets) loves him, she calls him Spot - and she's always watching the two tanks that have fish in, looking for him - or Charlie (vieja/chuco intermedium) and NoName (red oscar and resident grump) in the 6ft. So she's usually coming up to me saying "Where Spot?" or "Look - Charlie there!"...bless her. I'll put the camera on charge tonight, and see what I can get - but it'll probably be nothing - or blurry pics *sigh* Thanks for the help

These two went to their new home last night. A man who keeps catfish answered the aquarist classified ad, and picked them up last night. Nice fella, knew his fish. My Juwel Vision 180 is now completely empty, thinking of either selling it or setting up a Malawi tank. Not in the list of to do's this week though *lol* I miss 'em already. That's a bit tragic really, you can tell I dont get out much!

Glad they got sorted Lisa I know it must have been hard but some times you have to let these fellas go I noticed yesterday that Mokey our big goldfish had hmmm like a love bite mark on him near his gills I was a little worried it was the start of some sort of fish illness but today it has gone and we have come to the conclusion that he has been compeating for food with Rayman our pleco who are both over 10 inch...now I have watched these two since they were both tiny little things and they have always got into scraps with each other but they are both huge and we have seen Rayman seem to warn him off but also we have seen Mokey plonk him on the head right between his eyes all tame stuff at the moment but we are watching closely and if we had to choose Rayman would have to go as peoples mouths drop open when they see the size of Mokey they always stare in wonder when we say he is a common gold fish..I will get Daz to take pics of him and you will see what I mean..Linda

why did you get rid of them? Earlier in the thread (in the first post): Common plecs grow to over 2ft, and the L001s generally reach 16-20". In a 3 or 4ft tank, they wouldn't be able to move much. Things had been fine from the beginning as they were brought up with the oscar, but as our oscar hit his hormonal "I am big fish, bow before me" peak, they both - but especially Percy - were beaten up on a regular basis, so we moved them to our 3ft tank to recouperate while we found them a home, which they have now. Linda, thanks for the message - Id love to see piccies, he sounds a. gorgeous and b. ginormous! Yowser! I've heard about somenoe's royal plec doing that to discus, apparently they just latch on to their sides.

I just wondered because you were saying how you had an empty tank and the fact you are buying a new 6ft tank for your snails, you could have just bought one for them instead and put your snails in the empty tank

Actually it's a 5ft viv, and there's no way I could have got a tank big enough for my plecs for the price I paid for it. Here's a rough idea, my other 6ft tank cost me well over £600 just for the basics, then gravel, plants, heating, £140 on one of the filters alone - and we have 4 in it....etc on top. My viv is costing me £100. And the empty tank is only roughly 3ft, so I could have only put a pair or three max in snails in it. Not that I'd use it for snails as it's too high, and with it being bow fronted, the narrowest parts are too narrow for big snails. Fish are a much more expensive pet than snails. Hope that helps

Lisa, when you say 5 ft Viv, do you mean the kind for reptiles and such? The ones with the thinner glass that can't be used as fishtanks?
What kinds of snails are we talking about here? I know I keep over 50 Brigs in a 3' tank here, massively overstocked, I know, but lots of waterchanges, and lots of filtration helps! LOL I wish I had restraint enough to only put 3 aquatic snails into a 3' tank.
Or are we talking Gals? I'd assume stocking is different for them?

Yep, it's for my GALS, well, some of them! I'll have to tot up mentally...one sec....in the end it'll be home to 5 margies (four I currently own and one adult albino planned), and 2 tigers (hopefully getting a pair from Brixton in the summer). Maybe one of the upcoming iredaleis, but not sure whether it'll be too small to stay in with the monster biggies. My baby tigers wont go in there, when they're old enough to go to new homes, I'll keep the one baby I'm planning on keeping in with my dimis/two-tones and the other iredalei (if that goes ahead). Basically I'm planning in advance for my biggies - so it'll be pretty understocked at first, as two of my 4 current margies are babies, and I dont have the tigers yet. Only my 4 wickle tiny newborn baby ones... This is the vivarium I'm getting (just waiting for it to be delivered now): www.premierpetsonline.com/showdetails.asp?id=4207Obviously the picture on the site is the only one they use for all the different sizes, so that's not the exact one I'm getting - unless it's about 4ft tall *lol* I'm not sure what's happening fish tank wise, we're either selling the Vision, or using it for Malawis. Not up to me though, bossman just tells me - doesn't ask *lol*

Ahhhhh, ok. I know nothing of GALS, as they're illegal to have here. I of course assumed aquatics when you talked of snails! LOL 3' tank here is minimum 30 gallons, so can house at least 15 Brigs, OR 30 Spixis, or 6 Canas! No wonder we're all confuzzled......fishies, pleccies, and tanks that aren't meant to be filled with water
