Hi
Well that to me looks like it has been probably started with mating damage of some kind , the rest of the shell looks great so one can only assume that it is not a problem with calcium deficiency etc.
So yeah in my opinion that fissure has been started either by mating damage or a fall on to something when laying eggs or something along that line.
It looks like the inner exposed part is calcifying as I can't see any body visible in that damage , I don't think there is much you could do about it .... you could try a repair job but that is going to be risky being that close to the head and opening. I personally don't think that the snail will be suffering any and if you are okay with the way it looks then I would leave it unless it gets a lot worse ... keep us posted on how it develops.
Also from the look of it I doubt it has much growth left in it , if that is the case then that damage shouldn't get any worse.
Keep us updated if anything changes.
Cheers
Daz

Hmmm I have some thoughts on this too...looking at the shell there seems to be several layers and lines..can you give us some background how long have you had the snail what did it look like when you got it..and what temp do you keep your tank at..your jade brig did you get it from us?...it could be a few things here..but we will work with you to sort this out...Linda

oh well yeh i got it from you.
its in a 45x30x30 tank with a fluval 2 filter, colorful gravel at the bottom, ph8, um...i feed it shrimp, bloodworm, krill and algae pellets, and i put calcium liquid in and aquasafe when i change the water.
oh i know! it cud be that 'easybalance' stuff i put in. it said it keeps the water clean and stuff. maybe its that
anyway its got wierd now theres this orange-yellow thingy hanging out from the mantle what is that?
hmm...

Mmmmm easy balance , I don't know if it could cause that but I personally wouldn't use that kind of thing as in my opinion it's short cutting and there is always prices to paid for short cutting .... I doubt it has caused your snails problem but to be honest I can't guarantee that it hasn't. An orange thing hanging from it's mantle? ? Sounds very strange , if you can grab a pic of it that would be helpful .... mmmm .... odd. What temp is the tank at? I'm wondering if it's grown a little too quick which could happen with higher temps ... just a thought , yeah let us know the temp. Cheers Daz

Yes 28 is quite warm , they can live in water upto around 31/32 but we never have them in that kind of water as they grow quicker and die quicker. Personally I would lower it to somewhere between 23 to 25 , we keep ours at a pretty steady 23. Obviously the damage is done , not by you i must add ... it's just circumstances and you have done everything to sort it out so don't feel bad or anything. I notice one of your previous posts you found the pH to be 6.8 , those kinds of things don't help either but again you sorted it as soon as you found the problem so you did good So basically turn the temp down , stop using that easy balance , do a 10% water change once a week and if you can vaccum once every week or two ... one snail won't make a big mess. Now this dangly thing , is it on the left hand side when looking at the pic in this thread? If so it will be the penis. Also me and Linda feel a tad bad for you having a rough time with your first experience , and we'd like to offer you either a couple of Marisa's or a couple of Spixi and some trumpet snails (they'll help with aerating the substrate) just for the price of the postage (I say Marisa or Spixi as it is not wise to mix them as they do cross breed.) The offer is there should you want to take us up on the offer , just let us know. Cheers Daz

;D THANK YOU so much that would be so wonderful for me to be able to have another go with apple snails can i have one marisa theyre so cute. and er....shud i only get one trumpet cus i heard they breed like crazy. i think they should be sent in spring when its warm, im convinced sending snails in the cold traumatises them somehow. thank you so much you're so kind ;D mike

No problem bro , I'll send em to you whenever you want .... but yeah I agree , this is not the weather to be sending out live stuff , thats one of the reasons we are refurbishing our setups now and not selling any snails.
Trumpet snails do mass reproduce , seems like they sell well on ebay though so you could consider that as a way to keep the population down. I'll leave it in your hands though Mike , have a think about it and when the time comes that the weather is nicer just let me know what you want.
Speak soon bro

Just a big ditto to NOT using EasyBalance. And I would recommend at least 25% waterchanges at least once a week. Preferably 2 times a week. The more clean water you can add, the better the chances of that snail growing some good, strong, new shell.

When I got Buster (the cana in my avatar) he had some strange shell growth but nothing too bad. However, he was very inactive (and terrified of everything) and would sit with his poop tube out all the time......this caused a fissure in his shell. I worried about the little fella for months, tried everything I could and even accepted he might die but he came through in the end. Here's a more recent photo of my big guy.... I would turn your heater down to around 24C.....this will stop speedy growth and give your snail more chance to heal. Add liquid calcium, use a coral substrate, do regular water changes and don't trust the easy balance. Best of luck.
