What a laugh these snails are..I put some fresh parsley in their feeding dish last night came down this morning to find that they had dragged it out of the dish and dumped it into the peat in a neat pile ..ok you guys so you dont like parsley..LOL they are not to keen on prawns either..Linda

I know what you mean, I have a pair of lovebirds and anything I put in their feeding pot which they don't like the look of - they dump in the water pot!!! really entertaining to watch and observe aren't they. Val

Indeed they are but they are not always fun or funny...you should have seen me on friday..if it wasn’t for our lovely kind Emma I would be a nervous wreck..I have no fear of handling the Gals and I was carefully holding the biggest one Columbus and giving him a bath..they always stretch their necks out and look right at you its so sweet I love them and I felt a crack under my fingers..my tummy flipped so I examined him and found nothing amiss so I carried on only to look in sheer horror as a large piece of his shell appeared to be braking off..I just ran round the kitchen sobbing shouting "I was sorry"..I was really very hysterical and it’s not like me..Daz came running in took him off me and I got on the net to Emma LOL thanks Hun I was shaking like a leaf..as I was typing to Emma I could see Daz peeling this shell away..he was scared the body would fall into his hand we were a right state the pair of us..then I heard him say "ohh Ohh right look" and to my relief he had new shell underneath the old that had come away but it was a fair piece..I was as gentle as I could be when handling him we think it was just one of those things..I asked Emma to wait online while I bathed the other 2 if I had not done it right away I would have lost all confidence in holding them again..so thanks Emma for being there for us ...Linda

I must be missing simething here then...........why did the GALS have shell underneath the shell that had broken off??

i guess that the shell was partially fractured when linda picked him up. i suppose this could result in a flake of shell coming off. i have had a snail who did this all the time but he had a problem utilising calcium so his shell was very flaky. if a shell recieves damage it could result in a piece breaking off like that.

The shell of a GAL actually consists of 4 main layers so it's possible one of them flaked off. I'm surprised it flaked, usually you get the odd chip near the opening because it is so thin and some times I have removed a piece that has nearly peeled off. You can see the 1st almost transparent layer and then you'll notice it "hardens" off as the other layers are desposited.
Snail can repair chips at the mouth of the shell very easily with very little scarring. Breaks further down toward the apex are more serious, particularly holes as oppose to cracks although they can repair it with a thin papery covering which although will stop them drying out, doesn't afford them much protection.
