Hi Val,
I know you asked Darren but he ain't been around so I thought I will.
I use Irish peat and I now sterilise it before it gets to my tanks. It comes with all sorts of hitchhikers so it ain't worth it. I found out the hard way.
You can pour boiling water through it, bake it in the oven on max for 30mins - 1 hour or Microwave it. I use the Microwave coz it smells less and is quicker. Although I need to do more batches this way, I had to anyway with the oven coz I need so much so it's still way quicker.
I cover a large plastic tub's worth with clingfilm, wet it if it isn't already, and then nuke on full power for 5 mins.
Make sure the soil has cooled down before the snails see it, when you remove the clingfilm it will stink so I do this outside. I throw it all in a large plastic storage box and give it a stir each time I come back to it. It soon cools down if you do this and if you need to add any water that obviously helps.
