Emma, I am thinking of using vermiculite as my substrate because I think it's an excellent idea, what I want to know is how do you clean it? Can you bake this in the oven? Or do you just wash it through. Sorry to keep picking your brains. Val

HI Val,
With my vermiculite I wash it under the tap first in a colinder. Then I shove it in the oven for a while to make sure any bacteria is seen to. the washing in the sink i do mainly for aesphetic puposes.. snail poo in vermiculite looks rank so even if u cook at to sterilise, baked turds are never an attractive look. if u have peat u cant really see it anyway! and as paul said, removing poo from peat is like looking for a needle in a haystack... and somewhat grosser than that too!
