Hi paul, I have been looking on ur site under the archacatina section and noticing there are many very interesting looking snailies on it. I was just wondering if anyone owns any of the other species other than marginata

Hi Emma,
I have Archachatina marginata spp. marginata, possibly Archachatina ventricosa (but I'm not convinced - I think they are margies that look a little different and I have 1 Archachatina papyracea, soon to be 2. Unfortunately one didn't make the journey so I am getting another.
Archachatina seem very hard to get.

I reckon you could get degneri and ventricosa if you put the leg work in. Try the owner of www.gasteropoda.net/, Emmanuelle. He has pictures of them (well degneri) and he may be able to put you in touch with someone. I'd like to make certain parts of my website multi-lingual so we can share facilities like this. It'd be nice to have more access to snails in other countries. Catherine from France got some papyracea and camerunensis, which are beautiful snails from a pet shop in Paris. And Yuri told me he got a lot of his from the UK. So, I think you just have to hope someone gets some. I think pet shops just get a batch of stock rather than picking to order. Like these Bulimulus snails I got today!!!

Not many, and some have died including one on the way to me. She's sending me 2 more in an effort to get a successful breeding group and I don't think that leaves her with any. We're swapping because she wants to concentrate on Achatina and I want to get more obscure Archachatina hatched and spread around. This is an attempt to preserve this species because hers are the only ones we know about in captivity. They do lay but the babies don't survive, so I'm gonna try and figure out why.
If I have babies I'll let you know.

yeh if they had babies it wud be joyful.
i saw some papyracea on the achatschneckenforum - they were small and yellow with red flames. but ive seen catherines and they look a lot different - but still extremely beautiful.
i wud like more archachatina too, because they are not as well-represented as pets as achatina's are. hopefully lucy's ventricosa eggs will hatch...
kind regards
mike

The yellow ones, with red flames sound like camerunensis:

The picture of the German forum does look like the camerunensis, so perhaps we have another case of misidentification. I've asked Catherine how she knows the species. Looking through Bequaert there is only 1 picture of camerunensis, and only of the apex but it looks like the one above. Trouble is, the pictures of papyracea, of which there are about 4, also look like the ones above. I couldn't find any pictures in Bequaert that resemble my "papyracea" which are shown below: The trouble is that there are not equal and comparable descriptions and what there is is cryptic. Plus, the photos are black and white. The pictures tend to be of the apex, and the flames are quite thin on both species and that is why they both match the pictures. I'm gonna see what Catherine says, then contact Raphael (the German site owner) and see what he makes of it all. I also need to sift through the information carefully to see what results it brings. There are hints in unsual places. The trouble is with the book is that he gives you other people's descriptions but he fails to explicity say what are other people's descriptions and what is his final prognosis. It is meant as a normalisation of other people's work rather than a lesson in identification. I wish he was still alive, I'd fill his inbox with questions and clarifications. In fact, he's probably glad he is.... ;D
