Just starting to set up the margie tank (ex fish tank) today could use some advice.
1. Do I need to put anything in between the heatmat and the tank? Likewise, do I need to insulate the outside of the heatmat to avoid heat loss? If so what can I use? I have polystyrene tiles but don't know if they're safe.
2. Is it safe to use a tank background with a heatmat?
Thanks

As far as I know you only put something on the side that isn't facing the tank to avoid heat loss like you said. Polystyrene is the normal option. On most of the sites I've read it says the layer of poly needs to be at least 6mm, so you might have to double up on tiles.
I think Lisa asked about the tank background on the other board, and I think whoever answered said it should be safe as the mats give off minimal heat or something.
Sorry lol dunno if any of that's any help!

Kathy, why dont you stick it on the side, then you can be sure the background will be ok?
