I have a Giant African Land Snail called Kevin. I used to have four, but the other three died in the spring. I have had several babies from my two mating pairs. I've always been told that although snails have no set gender, you still need two to produce offspring. However... after Kevin had woken up from sleeping for a couple of months (is that normal to sleep for a few months?!), he suddenly laid a load of eggs which hatched. I then assumed that he'd been impregnated before the others died, and then had stored the eggs or whatever inside him while he had a little snooze. He's now in a separate tank from the babies because he's so greedy that he'll eat them as well once he's finished his cucumber. Today I notice that he's magically laid another couple of hundred eggs. Now I'm thinking... do snails only need to mate once in their life to regularly produce eggs? Kevin has totally baffled me because all that I've read about their mating and reproducing habits has gone down the plughole. If anyone has any answers... I would be really grateful. I'm also looking for homes for the new little ones so if anyone in the UK is interested, drop me a message

Yep snails can store sperm for several months, if not years Sleeping isn't normal for GALS, it's probably that he's been either too cold/wet/dry - they tend to seal over and aestivate when the conditions aren't quite right? Try giving him a spray and keeping him somewhere warm - near the radiator (although not too close!) is a good option, or failing that, get a cheapy heatmat from Ebay, and tape it to the side of his tank Hate to say it, but if they're fulicas, then the babies will be hard to find homes for. It's a good idea to pop any eggs you find into a freezer bag, freeze them, then throw them away - as they're virtually unrehomable with them being so common now. Dont forget to freeze them before you throw them away though otherwise they could hatch at the rubbish tip, and it's illegal to release them into the wild You'll probably get more info and advice over on Pet Snails, as they're more GALS related, and this place is a little quiet nowadays petsnails.proboards3.com/index.cgi
