oh i hate those. clean the soil out and the whole tank and give the snails a little wash with cold water, it won't harm them just do it over the shells, they are mites, and can come in with the soil or the vegetables. i had them, its nothing to major, just wash them, i am not to sure about the little baby, but if you have another tank, then maybe it would be safer to put him in the spare tank xxxx

hi there, just thought i'd let you know that i had two newborns accidentally hatch in with my big guys (i usually freeze the eggs to humanely dispose of them but i must have missed a couple) anyway these two little guys have been in with my five fully grown margies for 3 months now and are doing absolutely fine! my wee ones actually hitch a lift on the biggies shells! as far as your problem with mites, there is no way to completely eradicate them apart from to buy defender mites, which are used as biological pest control in gardens. these are a species of mite which actually hunts and feeds on the little white mites that infest the g.a.l.s. then die out when there are no more mites to feed on. unfortunately you have to buy defender mites in bulk - like a million at a time! so not really practical for folk like us. i am curently trying to arrange a supplier who will sell in smaller quantities, or even set up in business myself doing this, so i'll keep you informed of any developments. in the meam time, be vigilant. remove uneaten food every day, and add fresh WASHED food. use a feeding bowl (like a flower pot saucer) to keep the food off the soil itself, bath your snails once a week in a shallow bowl of tepid water - not freezing cold and not hot, but just warm. they'll love this and if you are careful to get the temperature right - about 25 degrees -, they love a rinse under the shower. lastly, do a complete clean out of your snail tank once every two weeks, that means new soil, scrub all bowls, misters etc. vinegar is good, as is a cage disenfectant, but you must rinse well. hope this helps, i know it was long winded but these beautiful creatures should be kept right. any more problems you can contact me on tori.purfit@hotmail.co.uk. best wishes, Tori
