We personally use the following and really like them , our big tanks we use :- Underworld Hang On Power Cleaner A simple to use hang on aquarium gravel cleaner, incorporating a powerful water pump and an efficient filter bag made of micro-porous material to trap even the smallest of particles. By using this method of re-circulating the aquarium water, the aquarist is able to clean the gravel thoroughly without having to change / remove large amounts of water.
NB : We still do a good water change after using this vaccum. Priced at £26.99 at most places , we are hoping to do this cheaper. For smaller tanks we use :- Gravel Cleaner Deluxe Easy to use pump action , also syphons water off into bucket or other recepticle enabling you to do a water change at the same time.Priced at around £6.99 , we are also hoping to do this cheaper. Those are the two pieces of kit that we now use and we are very happy with their effectiveness.

I bought a new gravel cleaner and it seems to be much better. only downside is i have to suck the end to start the siphoning process! Yesterday the inevitable happened and i got a mouthful of the unmentionable! oh well.. anything for my snails.. im sure a bit of snail poop does no harm! LOL!

LMAO!! YUP been there and done that , I actually know of a lady on Applesnail.net that actually swallowed a snail ... don't mean to put you off hehe. I'm sure there are devices around like a squeezy ball type thing which you can put on the pipe and use instead of sucking .. dunno what they are called though!!
Cheers

Submerge the whole thing, then lift the skinny end out, with your thumb covering it.
Lower the thumb-covered end to a bucket, let go, and the siphon should start.

Emma, I bought this one cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=20756&item=4378462591 - it was very very cheap (as you'll see, lol) and though it's not the sturdiest of inventions it does have a built in thingy where you just press it over and over again quickly and it starts the syphon - no need for drinking fish water, lol. Like I said, it's not perfect but it does the job *grin* TJay
