before i got my snails, i was using this stuff called fish safe in my tank. It is supposed to break down harmful chemicals like ammonia that builds up in the tank. I have been assuming its toxic to snails thou.. an I right in thinking this?

to add this is slightly different to the stuff that breaks down chlorine.. its more for removing the chemicals that build up when fish poop everywhere hehe

ooh! another point.. what is a "safe" amount of water to remove during water changes? I have been removing about half once a month on average. this is probably totally wrong, but please bare in mind no one ever told me otherwise!! (I buy my fish from petsmart.. where most the workers are even more younger and more dumb than me!! ( i bought shubumkins there that were riddled with white spot and all three died with 48hrs of arrival) I was stupid and i didnt realise it wasnt normal for them to have the fins clapped against the side of their bodies, and i thought the mouldy texture was something to do with their species!!!!!. eeekkk..

HI Emma! Yes it's me Ok, you don't really need to be using the "fish safe" thing that breaks down ammonia, unless your testing shows ammonia in the water. That points to a problem with cycling the tank though, and should be addressed with waterchanges, rather than "chemicals" As for waterchanges, if the filter is cycled, you can do as much water, as often as you like. The good biobugs are in the filter, primarily, and on decorations. Very few are actually in the water itself. As long as you match the temperature as closely as possible, you can change loads! For example, my snailie tank gets 25% every other day. My Discus tank gets 40% twice a week, and the rest of the tanks get 20-40% each and every week. If any of the critters seem a little "off" I usually do a couple of waterchanges, just to be sure they're in the cleanest conditions possible, and that usually sorts them out. HTH!
