Hello! I will be (hopefully) moving house in a few weeks, and Am concerned that my Aquasnailarium will be problematic to move with the rest of my furniture etc, so I am planning next weekend to transfer the snails to a separate container, empty the tank and take them all to my mum's or a brief holiday while we clear the furniture etc. I figured that would reduce the risks of damaging the aquarium or spilling the snails etc.
As well as moving the aquarium to my mum's, I also need to 'deal with' and infestation of baby Trumpet (?) snails that came in on some weed, obviously I can't add anything toxic to the tank to kill the infesting snails as it will harm my Brigs, so I will need to completely empty the tank, sccrub it out to rmeove and remaining eggs etc, clean the gravel and attempt to remove any eggs/snails from the plants... I was going to soak the gravel in boiling water for a while in the reasonable assumption that it will kill anything hiding in it (believe me I feel terrible even suggesting this, but my tank is currently overrun with lots of tiny baby snails that are eating everything in sight and they are only going to multiply if I don't do something!) So...
1. Can anyone suggest anything that might be used to soak the plants in which would remove the snails, but leave the plants intact? Or would it be easier to throw the plants out and replace them with new ones? Of course there is no guarantees that I wouldn't get more snail eggs come in on the new plants
2. Are there likely to be snails/eggs in the filter sponges? And if so how do I treat that without killing the bacteria in the filter?
3. Will my apple snails be ok in a smallish plastic tank with no filtration for about a week while I clean out and scrub my tank and refill it? I will need to dechlorinate the water and start cycling it before putting the brigs back in the main tank... hopefully by then we will have done the moving too so I can forgo having to repeat the process back to the new house.
I have some containers to transport some of the tank water to my mums house so they will not be going into tap water, but I was a little worried that the snails would suffer in an unfiltered tank?
Any advice would be much appreciated!
