Picked 4 adults trapdoor snails from the pond yesterday, was thinking to keep them in the fish tank indoors as they are pretty fascinating snails. I have not put them in the proper fish tank yet as I wanted to make sure they are healthy and no infection or anything first. I have put them in a smaller quarantine fish tank, and the water is just normal room temp with air pump and filter, just normal basic set up. I have looked at them yesterday and I know the 4 adults were having babies. Before I went to bed, there were 6 baby snails. And when I check on them this morning, there are 25 baby snails as well as the 4 adult ones. And I can still see the adults trying to have some more babies. So I would like to know do these type of snails just breed and breed or I am just so lucky to have 4 very pregnant snails here? I have done some research about these snails, but no mention about they will continuously having babies. Please help or give me any information if you know about them. Thanks.

it's probably just because you have brought them from the cold outdoors to warm indoors and as of most animals they have babies when the warmer weather comes, thye won't continuously have babies. Also, are you thinking of putting these snails into a tropical setup? i found they don't do well in warmer water

No I am not putting them in the tropical tanks as both tanks have already got lots of apple snails in. I am thinking to put a couple in the newts tank and see if they work, since Sian said she has some small snails in her newts tank. I ain't sure with all these babies though, as I have got a lot. The babies have to stay in the quarantine tank until I decide what to do with them. (PS I will wait to make sure the 4 adults are not going to give more babies before I transfer them into the new tank. )

Hi Felix
Yup that does happen , our big viv's came from a pond and when I put them in their own tank they spewed forth about 40 bambino's over a few days LOL ... even now they are dropping the odd one out.
I think why this happens is nothing to do with warmer water emulating warmer weather but is more to do with the water being fresh and completely different , i base this one our original small viv which had been rattling around our tropical tank for 6+ months. We decided to have a cold tank and we put her in , well within the hour she was birthing and now she has almost doubled in size. So she went from warmer to cold and birthed , therefore I'm pretty sure it is just the change of water and location in general and possibly the fact they are the only species in that tank ... i think they get a sense of 'confidence' and a need to make sure they have the new area mapped out before anything else can come along LOL.
Cheers
Daz

Daz Now you're telling me?! So that means I still have to face to see more babies, in fact I briefly counted that earlier, there re 38 baby snails, and I did not count those that're still in the white shells (membranes, is that what you called that?) So that means I have to wait for a few more days and look for more surprises!!! By the way, do you want 38+ baby Trapdoor snails? ;D They will be free. It's kinda cruel if I "dump" the babies back in the pond, isn't it? PS I have cleaned the adults shells, they have not got much algaes on them anymore, I won't clean them again and hope I did not make them too clean.
