Hubby is so nice to me....he bought me 10 blue shrimp on Friday and although I had always thought I wouldn't bother with the blues I just couldn't resist when I saw them. ;D They are so tiny (1cm to 2cm) and vary in blueness....some are transparent and some have orange in them. ;D Here's some piccies... Here's a cherry shrimp piccy too... My pregnant tiger shrimp is due to drop within the next 7 days....I can't wait to see little shrimplets.

tell us what colour the babies are when they breed (i think they are clear as the blue is dye)

I doubt they could survive being dip dyed or injected but I think they are fed some kind of food coloured food....or find blue food in the wild.
However, interestingly enough I had a slight black hair algae problem in my tiger shrimp tank....my pregnant female spent a few days graizing there and she is now blueish!
The blue shrimp don't seem to be growing although they have moulted.....I doubt their babies will have any hint of blue in them but they are interesting shrimp...one is developing an orange line down it's back.

its blue dye in their food as i know the die cant be injected and wont be taken up through shell the orange line may just be the food within them or maybe orange ovaries, hard to say without seeing it

The orange line runs all the way down it's back.....you know how cherries get the lighter line that run down theirs? Same as that but orange. They aren't showing saddles yet....they are far too small and it's not food in the stomach.
Interesting shrimp though....some have dark tiger shrimp type stripes coming through too.

LOL Linda.
The funny thing is i'm a complete insect scaredy cat and shrimp have those insect like legs but I let these guys hold onto me and do their thing with their little pinchers....I don't mind when my little tigers and cherries do the same. Would I let my almost 2 year old amano shrimp hang onto me? No way! They are huge in comparison....especially my female, she's a lot bigger than an adult brig......I do very careful water changes in that tank lol.

Are the shrimp easy to keep? I think they are adorable and hope to add a couple to one of my tanks.

I'll be honest with you.....my blues are all dead I think....my lfs said they don't grow any bigger than the size I got them and they never seemed as active as my cherry and tigers. My lfs said they were caridinas but I suspected they were some sort of neocaridina cross breed or dyed in some way. They didn't appreciate my water parameters (i'm assuming) and I couldn't find the info on them because they were so weird. If you want to get some shrimp, check your PH....a PH of over 7 is great for cherry shrimp, snowball shrimp and green shrimp (snowballs and cherrys will interbreed so don't keep them together). Tiger's prefer a lower PH and soft water.....I think my harder water is killing my shrimplets even tho the PH is 6.8. My GH is 10. I've decided not to buy anymore tiger shrimp until I can provide the correct water conditons. If i could find snowballs and green shrimp i would be sooo happy lol. Don't bother with the blue and red caridinas which are new on the market......they are some odd cross which aren't healthy and shouldn't be bought so they aren't re-stocked. Check out the shrimp variety page on www.petshrimp.com and go for shrimp that suit your water. I've kept amanos for almost 2 years with no problems and they grow to a nice size. My dream shrimp would be a nice vampire shrimp to keep in my 20g as I have the perfect current for one and they grow up to 6 inches long. ;D The best thing about shrimp is they are super friendly and climb all over your hands/arms when doing tank work.....and it tickles! ;D

yea shrimp are really easy but depends on what else is in the tank, i have a 12 gallon tank with a fighter (+ 4 guppie fry that i did have in a large jar) and about 30+ red crystal shrimp, im going to change my filter though as the current filter (juwel) is sucking up the shrimplets i think so will stick in an air powered one lets hope i can still sleep through the noise lol

dragonlord, why not just get a piece of open-cell foam from a craft shop (the kind for making chair cushions and the like) that has NOT been treated to be flame retardent or mildew-resistant, and put that over where the water goes into the filter?

ive tried foam of that fineness and it starves the pump of water, my course filter foam is over it atm and has been for 3 weeks but it's got 2 months to show my some results before i rip it out

How do you secure the foam to the filter? I have a fluval 4+ and tried covering it with tights/pantyhose but it would clog after a couple of days and wreck the white sponge inside. So I tried putting sponges on either side and then covering/holding them with the tights but my otto got caught and stuck.....it took ages to rescue him and he sadly died a couple of days later. I don't want to use rubber bands.....any ideas anyone?
